Van Gaal: A great result for us

29.08.2009

Bayern finally kick-started their league season on Saturday with a generally convincing 3-0 home win over champions VfL Wolfsburg. New signing Arjen Robben came on at half-time and contributed two goals on his debut. “I couldn’t have made a better start to my time here," the pacy Dutch ace declared. Coach Louis van Gaal was pleased with his men: ”I saw a very good Bayern Munich this evening."

Reaction to Bayern v Wolfsburg:

Louis van Gaal: “I saw a very good Bayern Munich this evening, against a very good team indeed, namely VfL Wolfsburg. We played well in the first half and our organisation was perfect. In the second half, the creative players scored the goals and made any number of chances on top. I’m delighted Franck Ribéry is back with us and that Arjen Robben has come to the club. We can be really thrilled with the result, but we still have to improve, and then things will really look up for us.“

Arjen Robben: “It was fantastic. I couldn’t have made a better start to my time here. I’m delighted I’ve come here. I’ve only trained with the rest of the team once, but I’m fit and the coach sent me on for the second half. That was terrific. That’s why I’ve come here. I want to win matches and trophies with the club. It’s very important to me that Franck plays here. Overall, I think it was a good team display. We controlled the game. It’s been a perfect day for me.“

Bayern v Wolves: Post-game interviews

Mario Gomez: “What can you say? It was sensational. As I said at the start of the season: once Franck returns, we’ll be much more dynamic and creative. Now we’ve added a second similar player. Let’s not forget we’ve done no more than win a game, but we can look to the future with optimism. It’s an important win, but we need to keep our feet on the ground. We’ve won a game and we have five points – the top team has ten. We mustn’t start thinking it’ll all follow automatically now. We have to perform week in, week out, and then we’ll win plenty of games.“

Armin Veh (Wolfsburg coach): “We came close to equalising in the second half, but we slept through the whole of the first period. We were much too passive. Our aim was to play on the break, but we launched no counter-attacks when we had the ball and we gave away possession much too easily. We could have equalised after half-time, but Bayern started hitting us on the break. It was obviously going to be difficult after that. Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry are top-class players.”

Zvjezdan Misimovic (Wolfsburg captain): “They blew us away in the last 20 minutes, but we had a couple of chances to equalise before then. We were forced to attack, which meant leaving gaps and handing Bayern space to counter-attack. We were totally asleep in the first half. If you play like that against Bayern in the first half, you don’t have a chance.“
