Bayern will travel to face Hertha BSC Berlin in the Bundesliga this coming Saturday without captain Oliver Kahn. Announcing the 38-year-old’s suspension via a news release on Tuesday lunchtime, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld cited “disciplinary reasons“ for the internal penalty. The head coach has also ordered the goalkeeper to pay a €25,000 ($36,700) club fine.
The reasons behind the shock reprimand would be dealt with internally, the club said. No further statement would be released to the media. Oliver Kahn took part in Tuesday morning’s squad training session as normal. "I understand this. Discipline is rule number one. We've talked the whole thing through, and I've accepted the decision," the keeper declared ahead of the day's second squad workout.
Lucky charm Rensing
The development means Michael Rensing is set for another outing in goal on Saturday. Kahn’s designated successor as number one keeper enjoyed a rare run in the first team in September and October after the captain underwent surgery to repair an elbow injury. 23-year-old Rensing’s seven-match tenure produced six victories and a draw.
Rensing’s overall record for Bayern will inspire confidence for the final league match before Christmas in Berlin. Kahn’s understudy has yet to lose in 17 Bundesliga appearances (12 wins, 5 draws).
